Great article, thanks for the insight. It's clear that the traditional purchase funnel needs to evolve fast to keep up with internet technology. Some businesses have been too slow to update their behaviours and are suffering as a result. The internet will continue to challenge the marketing paradigm for years to come and eventually the industry will catch up!

Matt,

Great topic and timely too:

The buying cycle is especially relevant now during tougher economic times where we're already beginning to see an increasing trend in the amount of time being taken to go from the research to the buying stage in many verticals.

That said, your comments about how people search and the search buying cycle is bang on! Combine this knowledge with delivering the most relevant pages to searchers and companies will be helping shorten the buying cycle that occurs on their website.

Aside from making sure to target keywords that are more researched based like "product X reviews" and "product X ratings", including product reviews on product specific landing pages can also help shorten the buying cycle, by providing the information needed to make a purchase decision much more quickly.

As you said, this all sounds obvious, but there still are countless online retailers and companies leaving lots of money on the table by not following these common sense strategies!
