Hi
Im a first time visitor to the blog and I am wondering how many press release Web sites do you recommend submitting to.

Do you go with the "as many as possible " or do you choose select PR's

Thanks

[...] Things you don’t know about online PR The shift from paper to online media has also seen the shift in other media related things like PR in cyberspace. The two have become so interchangeable that it’s already hard to draw the line between them. Online PR is more concerned with client perception and building relationships with people who matter. There are many elements involved in online PR and here are some of them: developing key relationships, going social, writing for web, time for release and measuring impact.
Dear Matt,

I only just discovered your blog. A good read! I've just subscribed.

There's a lot of talk going on about 'Online PR'. I hear a lot of different views and definitions. Fair enough, because the boundaries between marketing, public relations, B2B and B2C have blurred.

I feel that now more than ever, building business online means building online relationships. The catalyst of this process is great content. The kind of content people want to consume, spread, share and subscribe to. (Like I just did).

FYI - my latest blog post on the difference between 'online publicity' and 'online PR'.

All the best,
Michiel

I think online PR comes in many different shapes and sizes but is very important to a business. Putting together a well though out campaign in advance is where a business can see the best results.

Matt, great post and particularly like the examples. One thing about online PR that I love is that it is measurable -- I'm not sure how much this is blurring of the SEO/PR lines, but when you post a release or some other PR with a unique URL and can count and follow the traffic back because of that PR activity, you move the PR discussion far from the hazy, "How do I know if this PR tactic produced any results?" debate. On a larger scale, I agree with you 100 percent that it's all about the content. Online tools are cool, revolutionary even. Yet it's what we have to say, and not how we say it that is ultimately most important. I blogged about that here: http://www.wordwritepr.com/blogstorytelling/?p=6

Great article Matt.

Do you have info about any more resources - both online and off - about the subject your are writing about in this article?

Are there any good books out there about digital PR?

What are you basing your opinion?

@Mark Stringer

Hey Mark, good question. You're correct, that in terms of getting raw link popularity bad publicity can be even more effective than good. However, if this is at the expense of brand equity, then it'll still be considered a failure by most. There's no point being top of the search engines ultimately if nobody will buy from you.

That said, negative publicity is a very different animal online. It's far easier to monitor and respond to quickly. While at the same time it's harder to control and has the propensity to spread like wildfire when handled badly.
