Datadial had developed their bespoke e-commerce software for the past 10 years. It is best of its breed and packs more functionality than many mainstreams “off the shelf” e-commerce packages out there. Just as no two people are the same, no two online businesses are the same. Where do we do it?
All our bespoke e-commerce work is carried out in-house at our Hammersmith office in West London, W6. We do not outsource our work. We are a team of about 15, geared towards building our clients’ businesses and brands online.

TecDoc are a German supplier of car parts databases. For PPCGB.com we load data from TecDoc on the fly once a user has input their car make, model, year, engine size.
This means that users have direct access to over 100,000 products and many more variants.
One frustration is that you cannot show any parts until the car’s details have been input. To ease the process we included functionality to integrate the site with the Vehicle look up (VRM) facility provided by the DVLA so that users only have to input their vehicle registration number.

Design911 – Bespoke E-commerce – Porsche Parts Supplier

Most clients now want their site built on commercially available software, preferably open source. However there are times when proprietary software can be the best option.
The design911 site is built on Datadial’s first iteration of its own e-commerce software, launched around 2004. It has had functionality upon functionality added to it and yet still the underlying software has been resilient and robust.
If it had been built on a purchased e-commerce software it’s very likely that we would have come up against limitations many years ago. As it is we have been able to build on and expand the site without any issues as we have total control of the source code.
Over and above the all standard e-commerce functionality this site includes:
- abandoned basket email functionality,
- tyre finder,
- fast part finder,
- find parts via part diagrams digitised from car manuals,
- automatic feeds for Google and Ebay,
- integration with Orderwise stock control system
- bulk imports
- payment by bank transfer
- kiosk functionality for use in garages for touchscreen

- and much more
How have we managed to work together for so long (since 1998) and still get on?
As one of our first clients we are proud that we are still working on the Design911 website after so long and still adding more and more functionality to their site.
To the credit of Design911 they are willing to try out new ideas to grow their business online. Sometimes these work, sometimes they don’t, but as both companies view the relationship for the long term it’s an accepted principal that this will be part of the process.
We originally came together from an Advert that we had placed on Loot, free ad newspaper (pre Gumtree et al). If you remember Loot then you’re probably getting on, like us :)

TurtleMat – Project Detail – Web Based Call Centre Software – Washable Dirt Trapper Doormats
Part of an e-commerce project linking Call Centre, Fulfillment House and Website.
Turtle Mat have customers who like to order online or by telephone. There was an issue in that their telesales team had no access to online orders or customer information. So people ringing up to enquire about an order were often given the incorrect information as the telelsales team had no access to online orders.
Turtlemat use an outsourced telesales company who are used to working with their own software, so it was a challenge to build them something that would be easily adopted and easy to use. When we produced the final call centre software for them we were told that it was the best that they had ever used from a 3rd party provider.
Now when ever any calls to discuss an order which was placed online, or if they look up an order online which they placed by phone they get the same information. Telesales staff also now have access to all the online offers and promotions running at any one time.
The integration of the call centre software was part of an e-commerce project linking Call Centre, Fulfillment House and Website all together.

This is an example of a website for which off the shelf shopping software would not be able to cope.
If you have ever ordered a pair or curtains you will know how complicated it can be. You need to know about pattern repeats, drops, width measurements, pelmet pleats, flop overs, piping, poles, tiebacks, voiles, cushions and how to calculate it all in an instant for the online user.
As this was a redevelopment of an existing site the client had a sophisticated set of requirements not just for curtain calculations but also delivery management and accommodation of standard e-commerce products.
So we developed a bespoke e-commerce website.
The site accommodates:
- Made to Measure Curtains, Roman and Swedish Blinds, Quilts, Cushions, Upholstered Chairs, Sofas, Wallpapers and standart products.
- There are lots of additional options where relevant such as options for second lining fabrics, border fabrics piping, buttons etc.
- Includes multiple payment options including phone, cheque, PayPal, credit card.
- Sophisticated delivery management allows for split deliveries for orders containing mixed product types such as a sofa and a free sample. Dynamic Postcode calculator offers cheapest postage options.
- Includes back end call centre order entry and CRM. All fully updateable via bespoke CMS
Built from the ground up with SEO in mind, this is the only fully SEO friendly curtain website in the world as far as we know!

Natural Curtain Company approached Datadial when they realised their existing site was failing and that the platform that it was built on could not sustain the complexity of their product offering, nor was it extensible enough to accommodate new products.
Instead of shoe-horning Natural Curtain’s business model into pre-existing e-commerce software as had happened on their previous site we instead built the site to their exacting requirements from the ground up.
The result is a complex and sophisticated ordering system that has minimised the amount of in house administration of online orders and virtually eliminated user errors on the site as there is now so much validation before ordering that users cannot order the wrong thing.
The site is integrated with Datadial’s email marketing software as well as Wufoo and online survey tool as well as their own bespoke order management system.
The site has also been supported by an online marketing campaign to keep the site listed for any curtain related queries. A recent conversion rate optimisation exercise where we A/B tested homepage layouts had the effect of increasing revenue by 30%.
